The Fernhurst Society
Fernhurst 1815 parish list
"The Number of the Peoppl (sic) of the Parish of Fernhurst March 29th 1815"
Original compiled by Rev John Henry Spelman Cary, Curate, held at West Sussex Record Office, Chichester (reference Par 82/7/2)
Transcribed by John David Trussler on 10 March 2005.
I have tried to make an accurate, exact copy of the abbreviations, lettering and spelling from the original two page manuscript but some of the writing was difficult to decipher so I may have made one or two mistakes. The original document was written on plain paper but names in column 1 do not align across the page with names in column 2 and on page 1 there are 47 families in column 1 and only 45 in column 2. I cannot replicate the hand draw brackets but I think my convention should be understandable.

Transcriber's observations on Cary's listing:
- He was inconsistent with his layout and indiscriminate with his commas & full stops
- He has bracketed 26 pairs, 3 sets of 3, 1 set of 4 & 1 set of 5, presumably as families living in the same building probably semi-detached or terraced houses.
- He may have used the surname ‘Ethernton’ as an alternative spelling for ‘Etherington’
- He gave no name for the 13 residents at ‘Stanlyis Farm-house’
- In places he used ‘Loir’ for ‘Lower’ and thus ‘Loir Lodies’ must be ‘Lower Lodge’
- He has omitted the ‘e’ from names & places such as Madgwick, Eldridg, Cooks Bridg
- He may have deleted Robt Terry Jnr from Page 2 Col 1.
- Under The Hampshire Land:
a. He has ‘Sharverd’ but it was probably ‘Shalford’ whereas ‘Wrettue’ must be ‘Reeth’
b. He has shown Bexley Hill against James James only but the remaining 6 families also lived at Bexley Hill.
